Did you know?
- 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year (American Childhood Cancer Organization)
- Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 in the U.S. (Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation)
- 12% of children diagnosed with cancer do not survive. That's 1 out of 8 children that are diagnosed. (CureSearch for Children's Cancer)
- In the last 20 years, only two new drugs have been developed to treat children with cancer (American Childhood Cancer Organization)
- There are 16 major types of pediatric cancers and over 100 sub-types (Coalition Against Childhood Cancer)
Childhood cancer does not discriminate between socioeconomic class, race, religion, or geographic region. Any child at any age can be affected by it. There is not always a "cause" as to why a child has cancer - it is often random. Chances are, you know a family that has been affected by childhood cancer. If you do, you know the devastation it can cause, even when the child survives.
Awareness needs to be raised for childhood cancer. There isn't near enough research going into cures for this terrible disease, nor is there enough research into the long-term effects of cancer and cancer treatments. These young, innocent children deserve to have people fighting for their health. They deserve to have a childhood that isn't plagued by trips to the hospital, losing their hair, or being unable to attend normal childhood activities.
Please, share some of these facts with people you know. The more people are aware of childhood cancer, the more help can be provided to these children.
